Fernando’s research interests comprise pharmaceutical formulations, manufacturing, tablet dissolution, characterization of tablet structure, powder flow, mixing, segregation, compression, liquids and suspensions, capsule filling, sustained release formulations, and tablet coating. He is a distinguished professor of Chemical and Biochemical Engineering at Rutgers University.

Mr. Muzzio is director of the NSF Engineering Research Center on Structured Organic Particulate Systems, focusing on continuous manufacturing, particle engineering, and personalized medicine.

Fernando, as the lead for the NSF division and technical consultant, has maintained partnerships with Janssen and with GSK on Advanced Pharmaceutical Manufacturing, which since 2012.

He provides expert witness services through Acumen Biopharma, a company dedicated to providing expert witness and laboratory testing services for pharmaceutical IP and anti-trust litigation. His areas of expertise include formulations and manufacturing processes. In the last five years, much of Mr. Muzzio’s activity focuses on abuse deterrent opioid formulations.

In 2014, Fernando Muzzio founded Integra Continuous Manufacturing Systems, a company dedicated to supporting development and implementation of continuous manufacturing systems across industry.
